Trade is one of the most important aspects of any nation, it provides wealth and can effect the future of a country considerably. Consequently any commercial shipping to and from our nation must be defended, however there are questions as to how this should be done. Should RBN ships patrol major trade routes? Or should the civilian crews of the ships be allowed to arm themselves for defencive purposes?
The latter may cause yet more problems, as pirates may too arm themselves for less than legal reasons, but patroling the routes will stretch the navy considerably. However before we come to a decision on this we have another one to make, what sort of industries should our nation support?
The arms industry is a very profitable one, but we must consider the fact that some of the weapons we manufacture may fall into the hands of undesirable people. Instead of this there is of course the manufacture of consumer goods, such as fridges and what not which are in great demand and could be easily made and exported. However manufacturing is not the only way of making money. Exploiting natural resources is one way, however this would require us to be on a map which we aren't yet.
I know i've given you a lot to think about, but any feedback would be appreciated.

I think that if we go onto this map once we pass the 3-month barrier, we should set up an arms industry, but only sell our weapons etc. to people we know are reliable and are friends with Bosworth. After all, we don't want to sell weapons to our enemies, but that doesn't mean we can't sell them at all. As for patrols and/or arming civilians, I believe that we shouldn't waste our Navy on pirate rabble, instead we should issue lisences on all firearms and other weapons, making it legal to have weapons to defend your ship from pirate attacks but only if your background history etc. checks out (ie you're no a homocidal maniac). The Navy should not have to worry about pirates attacking our trading ships, instead use them for defending us in war.

An arms industry is a good idea, i think we should go with it and i also like your solution to the pirates problem. I will need to consider what is a reasonable defence before making a move towards gun lisences as we don't want people to use weapons to excess. I will consider what weapons we should make and would welcome comments from you Elizabeth, i believe some nations design ships and i know of someone who could help us with that.

I don't really agree with civilians being armed, couldn't the police or coast gaurd provide the fire power for trading ships near the coast?

That is a good idea actually, one we should seriously consider . However it tends to be further out that modern pirates operate, so the issue still remains unresolved.

I'm glad to be of help, what do you suggest for when the pirates are further out?

Possibly we will have to revert to the civilian licences for that

Well, if we have the Coast Guard to spread out along the Coast, I don't see why we shouldn't simply have Coast Guard to protect from pirates. But I stand by the lisencing for further out.
